Serena Williams’ career is far from over… the tennis legend advanced in the US Open on Wednesday night with a huge win – and Tiger Woods was there to cheer her on!!
Williams defeated No. 2 seed Anett Kontaveit in New York, 7-6 (4), 2-6, 6-2, dominating the third set.
Despite only playing a handful of times prior to the major tournament this year, the 40-year-old appeared to be in vintage form.
The crowd was packed with celebrities for the evening, which many thought would be Serena’s final match of her career, with Woods, Bella Hadid, Gigi Hadid, Spike Lee, Zendaya, Jared Leto, and others ecstatic after each point she won.
Even LeBron James cheered her on from his couch, calling her the “G.O.A.T.” after she won.
Serena lingered on the court for several minutes after winning, taking it all in.
“There’s no rush here,” she said after the match. “This group is fantastic. Oh my gosh. It’s absolutely fantastic. So there’s still some life in me.”
Williams, who defeated Danka Kovinic earlier this week to advance to Wednesday’s match, announced in early August that she would retire after the U.S. Open, creating a huge demand for celebrities and regular people to witness her final moments on the court.
